Red and Black

Gustaf Munch-Petersen: Nineteen Poems

The green leaves turn yellow –

The storms ravage

month after month –

Yellow-red leaves cling to black branches –

Slowly the rain writhes loose the stalks –

The juice is trapped in the root –

Under the shifting sky

the soil sleeps its rest –

Green human hearts blacken –

The storms of humans bleeding approach –

The rain of confusion seeps night and day –

The laws of the heart deteriorate –

The sparkling splendour of autumn

wanders in dead rows

through humans’ cities –

- The sun is most distant now –
