The Reef

Gustaf Munch-Petersen: Nineteen Poems

Black-white gulls

with yellow beaks against the summer breeze

upon the back of the reef –

A seal turns a black head

back and forth glancing

along the waterline –

The only aster of the reef burns violet

in the sun –

The flies dance above

the dunghill of the gulls –

The seal disappears –

The gulls take off –

The beach aster is stuck in its crack –

A red sail appears –
