Edith Södergran: The Shadow of the Future
What do you know? What do you know?
It is difficult to say.
I feel happiness in my hand, happiness in itself,
I have luck, the great luck, in my fingers.
Oh wonderful luck!
I’m counted among those who believe in their own star:
to catch the secret powers of fate.
What can the secret powers of fate do when you catch them
with hands strong with truth?
Destroyable words, destroyable.
But my star doesn’t deny itself.
Against my star standing threatening in the sky
I feel my own inadequacy.
Where shall I attain the heavy hand to grasp the sword with?
Don’t ask me, says my star,
human child, hide your face from the incomprehensible,
what you yourself contain shall give you the power.
