Edith Södergran: The Shadow of the Future
All people are toys.
I was a toy myself yesterday.
Today I am the one who breaks open the mystery.
I want everybody to come to me,
I want everybody to hear how my heart beats.
Fire and blood and the balm of the future shall you receive from my hands.
All of humanity I will consecrate to the future.
My flaming line every child must read.
I will convert you all to a holier god.
All superstition I will sweep out with a silent broom,
all smallness I will mock to death.
Your great snake I will mount; its head I will cut in half with my sword.
Oh you, my good sword, which I received from Heaven, I kiss you.
You shall not rest
before the Earth is a garden, where gods dream over wondrous cups.
